Panayiotis Demopoulos was born in Athens and grew up in Kozani, Greece in a musical family. After playing music in many styles as a teenager, he commenced his formal studies with Margaret McLeod at Napier University, Edinburgh in 1996. In 2001 he received an award to study the piano with Murray McLachlan and composition with Tony Gilbert at the Royal Northern College of Music. From 2004 he was a scholar at Cambridge University and the University of York, successfully completing a PhD in composition in 2007.

Mr. Demopoulos has also learned music with John Taylor, George Lewis, Peter Feuchtwanger, James MacMillan, Harrison Birtwistle, Robin Holloway, Bernard Roberts and Jonathan Harvey. His original compositions vary and encompass a wide range of stylistic sensibilities from the eclectic and experimental spectrum to more conventional concert hall music and popular idioms.

He has performed extensively as a pianist and his works have been performed in many countries across Europe. He is the founder of the Anaeresis music charity and a keen improviser. From 2008, he teaches at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His writings and research interests cover a diverse range of subjects including the historiographies of Western Art, critical theory, microtonal music and the sociology of music.

Panos holds a certificate in Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh, coaches the Dynamis Kozani basketball club and is a poetry and European cinema fanatic. He is married to the organist Nicola Harrington.
