Since the beginning of his professional career in 2004, Richard Craig has quietly established himself as one of the leading interpreters of contemporary music in his generation, initiating new works and extending the expressive range of the flute. His dedication to realising works of the avantgarde and developing new repertoire has led him to be invited to perform with ensembles Klangforum Wien and MusikFabrik, and to tour extensively performing in some of the most prestigious festivals such as MaerzMusik, Vienice Biennale, Wittener Musiktage, Warsaw Autumn, ULTIMA and Festival d'Automne.

Richard was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and studied flute at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Ri-chard Blake and Sheena Gordon. Graduating in 2003, he continued his studies (supported by the Scottish International Educational Trust and a Dewar Arts award) at the CNR Strasbourg with Mario Caroli and Claire Gentilhomme. In 2006 he received a “diplôme de spécialisation” from the CNR de Strasbourg, achieving ‘unanimité et felicitations du jury'. During this time Richard also received guidance from Pierre-Yves Artaud.

Richard has worked with composers Brian Ferneyhough, Beat Furrer, James Dillon, Salvatore Sciarrino, Kaija Saariaho, Richard Barrett, Helmut Lachenmann and musicians such as Emilio Pomarico, Enno Poppe, Stefan Asbury, Barry Guy, Roberto Fabbriciani and Rohan de Saram. Recent broadcasts include WDR Colone,YLE Finland, Radio France, Radio Nacional de España, Swedish Radio, ARTE, and Icelandic RUV.

He has given classes and workshops to musicians and composers around the world, an activity that he sees as vital to the music of our time. In 2010, Richard was appointed Visiting Fellow in Performance at the University of Aberdeen and he was awarded an arbetesstipendium from the Swedish Arts Grant Authority for 2009/10 in recognition for his work in contemporary music. www.richardcraig.net
