Alexander Schmalcz received his first piano lessons as a chorister in the Dresden Kreuzchor, to which he belonged between 1979 and 1988. In 1990, he was accepted by the Dresden Conservatoire, where he continued his studies. In 1991, he moved to the Utrecht Conservatoire, where his teacher was Alexander Warenberg. In 1993 he became a student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he studied both with Iain Burnside and Graham Johnson. He has won numerous prizes, including the Gerald Moore Award in 1996 and the Megan Foster accompanist Prize. In 1995 together with his Piano trio, he won the Nederlands Impressariaat competition.

Alexander Schmalcz can be heard regularly in the most important cultural centres of Europe, the Americas and Japan and in international festivals and concert halls such as Wigmore Hall in London, the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Liederhalle Stuttgart, the Kennedy Center Washington D.C., the Frauenkirche Dresden, the Music Festival in Schloss Elmau, the Windsor Festival, the Tirolean Festival in Erl, the European Music Festival Stuttgart and the Musikwoche in Hitzacker. As accompanist, he works regularly with international singers such as Matthias Goerne, Peter Schreier, Grace Bumbry, Konrad Jarnot, Stephan Genz, Christoph Genz, Marcus Ullmann, Stephan Loges and Doris Soffel. His chamber music partners include the Petersen Quartet, cellist Claus Reichardt and Reciter Hans-Jürgen Schatz and Inge Borkh. Alexander Schmalcz can often be heard in radio broadcasts, for example by the BBC, the Southwest German Radio (SWR) and in broadcasts with Dutch Radio. He has taught at the Robert Schumann Conservatoire in Düsseldorf since 1999.

More recently in 2004, he partnered Matthias Goerne in a joint masterclass at the Wigmore Hall in London. Also in 2004, he was invited to take part as a jury member in the competition in Munich of "Das Deutsche Romantische Lied". Future engagements include debuts in the Vienna Musikverein, Berlin Philharmonie, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Cologne Philharmonie, Schwetzingen Festspiele, Salzburg Festival and Prague Spring Festival as well as concert tours in the US and Japan.
