From the age of eleven, Sophie Harris studied with William Pleeth, subsequently attending Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. On graduating, Sophie joined the award-winning Smith Quartet, performing at numerous European festivals and making many recordings for radio and television; she spent five years with the Smith in total. In 1995 she began to create new territory for the solo 'cello in contemporary culture, working with some of today's most eminent composers including Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman and Steve Reich. She has had works commissioned for her from composers as diverse as Django Bates, Graham Firkin and Mateo Fargeon. She plays a wide repertoire in her extensive performances with many of Britain's leading chamber ensembles including the Balenescu Quartet, the Hilliard Ensemble, the Gavin Bryars Ensemble and the Duke Quartet, also taking part in many recordings and radio broadcasts. Sophie plays a 'cello made in 1730 by Daniel Parker.
